An Unusual Antique bronze model of Repentant Mary Magdalene after Canova
An unusually large Antique bronze model of Repentant Mary Magdalene after Italian sculptor Antonio Canova*.
This model, which probably dates from the late 19th century does not include the skull present in Canova’s version but is otherwise quite identical. The finish has a dark brown patina with age appropriate flaws such as surface oxidation. It might have had a wooden cross lying across her lap. This bronze is otherwise in very good age appropriate condition and quite stunning. We have not found another model of this size, and very few smaller bronze models have come on the market.

, about 90 cm high, known in two final versions, now in Genoa and St Petersburg.
The original version of 1793-1796 was praised at the
Salon of 1808
, the first of Canova’s works to be a success there.

and, after his death, to signor d’Aguado.
